About The School Of Baking

We offer the Workforce Skills Qualification (WSQ) modules under SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) for the Food Services (FSS) sector.

The modules cover all aspects of baking, including bread, cakes, pastries and dim sum, and are delivered on theory and hands-on practical training based on skill standards.

We provide everything you need and participants get to take their amazing creations home. Successful completion of each module will lead to a Statement of Attainment (SOA).

Chef Low Tian Heng

Chef Low has accumulated more than 20 years of experience in all phases of the bakery sector, including R&D innovation, process optimization, plant or lab trials, consultancy and management work and conduct of training, presentations and demonstrations. Chef Walter is a bread specialist. He has published articles for the Penal of Beijing Bakery Association Magazine for topics in flour, dough and bread.

Chef Marcus Lem

Chef Marcus has been in the food and beverage industry for a span of 38 years. He brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience, in research development work of new ideas for many chain stores in Singapore, 5- Stars hotels, pastry kitchen setup and operations in Singapore, Myanmar and Vietnam. Chef Marcus has also taken part in many competitions and contributed to the success of Record Breaking Feast in making Singapore’s Largest Pizza.

Chef Gan You Cheng

With well over 35 years of baking knowledge and experience under his belt, Mr Gan Youcheng brings with him a sleuth of experience to the school. Dedicated to his craft, Mr Gan has extensive teaching experience, having been a bilingual bakery instructor at Baking Industry Training Center, Singapore for more than 24 years.

Mr Gan graduated from AIB International, Industrial Baking Science in 1985 and also holds the Certificate in Adult Continuing Training and Assessment.

SkillsFuture Singapore Funding

SSG Funding Principle

SkillsFuture is a national movement to enable all Singaporeans and permanent residents to develop to their fullest potential throughout life. Both Singaporeans and Singapore Permanent Residents (PRs) are eligible for course subsidies. Employers can also tap on absentee payroll support funding for employer-sponsored training.

SkillsFuture Course Fee Funding

Singaporeans and Permanent Residents (PR) aged 21 and above will enjoy a training grant of 50% (Level 4 WSQ courses) or 80% (Level 3 WSQ courses) from SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) when they sign up for WSQ courses.

Singaporeans 40 years old and above will be able to enjoy up to 90% of course fees funding with SkillsFuture Mid-Career Enhanced Subsidy when they enrol for these courses.

The course applicant will be required to pay only the Nett Course Fee after course fee subsidy to BITC.

SkillsFuture Credit

SkillsFuture Credit aims to encourage individuals to take ownership of their skills development and lifelong learning. All Singaporeans aged 25 and above will receive an opening credit of S$500 from January 2016. Your credit will not expire and the government will provide periodic top-ups, so you may accumulate your credit.

SkillsFuture Credit is only applicable to self-sponsored candidates.

Workfare Skills Support (WSS) for Individuals

To qualify for the Training Commitment Award and Training Allowance, individuals must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a Singapore Citizen; and
  • Aged 35 years and above; and
  • Earn a monthly income of not more than $2,300.
Training Commitment Award (TCA)
  • No application is required.
  • Eligible individuals will automatically be awarded the Training Commitment Award (TCA) upon achieving any 2 Statements of Attainment (SOA) period per WSS eligibility year.
  • Individuals will receive $100 for each achievement, up to $200 per year.
Employer-Based Training Funding Support

Course Fee Subsidies and Absentee Payroll Funding are available for employers sponsoring employees who are either Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents for WSQ courses.

Eligibility Criteria
  • Participant must be sponsored by organisation and is a direct employee.
  • Organisation must be registered in Singapore and register for a SSG SkillsConnect account at www.skillsconnect.gov.sg.
  • Organisation must submit funding application for Course Fee Support/ Absentee Payroll via the SkillsConnect system within 30 days from course commencement date.
  • BITC is not liable if applicant fails to meet at least 75% attendance, does not complete or fail the assessment, or for any other reason where Course Fee Support/ Absentee Payroll funding is not submitted or approved. In this case, we will unfortunately have to, under SSG’s regulation, charge your organisation the full fee for each participant.

Course Fee Subsidies

Course Fee Subsidies for employer-sponsored training are available for SSG-supported courses. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) can enjoy up to 90% of course fees funding with Enhanced Training Support for SMEs.

SMEs are defined as companies with:

  • (i) at least 30% local shareholding; AND
  • (ii) Group annual sales turnover of not more than $100 million OR Group employment size of not more than 200 employees.

If an enterprise has Singaporean employees who are earning not more than $2,000 per month and are 35 years old and above, they will also benefit from the Workfare Training Support (WTS) scheme when they are sponsored for training.

Absentee Payroll

Absentee Payroll (AP) funding is a grant to help employers defray the manpower costs incurred when they send their employees for certifiable skills training during working hours.

For training conducted outside working hours, the grant is meant to alleviate the opportunity costs incurred by the employees. Hence, the funding is to be paid to the employees together with the mandatory top-up by the employer.
